Murtas Fattoria San Michele A Torri 75cl
In the 1960s some Tuscan producers began to experiment with non-indigenous Italian varieties especially grapes from Bordeaux like Merlot and the two Cabernets, as well as Syrah. The usually high quality wines initially fell foul of regulations and had to be classed as just Vino di Tavola, with IGT status only being approved much later. San Michele’s luscious ‘Murtas’ is our first such ‘Super Tuscan’ which I would have listed some years ago had its drab label not needed the serious improvement it’s now received. Named after, and in recognition of, San Michele’s cellar manager Murtas Terzuoli, this blend includes the estate’s high quality Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Colorino, found and rescued from an old vineyard. The grapes are left on the vines until almost over-ripe, then harvested and fermented singly before aging in large oak barrels (Cabernet Sauvignon) and barriques (Sangiovese and Colorino). The result is (super) impressive.
It’s a bright ruby red colour with intense aromas of pepper, tobacco and coffee as well as some herbaceous notes. In the mouth there’s generous red fruit with warmth and softness and a slightly toasty finish.
San Michele suggest pairing with wild boar, sweet and sour hare, T-bone steak or roasted game. On a more everyday and less meaty level I’ve enjoyed it with rich, tomato-based Italian food of various types, even pizza!
